Sunday night I heard Ellie get up a few times to go to the bathroom, and in the morning she said that it hurt and she kept having to go, but nothing was coming out. I thought she had an UTI, so I made a Dr. appointment for her.
The doctor checked her out and gave me a prescription for a cream (to help the burning) and a stool softener (she thought maybe Ellie had a big poo that was pressing on her bladder making her feel like she needed to go) She also wanted Ellie to pee in a cup...it wasn't gonna happen. She had "performance anxiety" the Dr said, and gave us the cup to take home.
We went to fill her prescriptions and she had to go, so we went and I caught some in the cup.
Took it back to the Dr. office and went home for lunch. Just after I put Brooke down for her nap, the Dr calls and says that Ellie does not have a UTI but there was glucose in her urine and we needed to come back right away for a blood test.
I knew I couldn't handle Ellie getting a blood test AND Brooke running around, so I called Laural (she was working) then called Erin to watch Brooke (lucky for me, she was home and not busy - and she lives right across the street from the Dr office) We got to the office and into a room right away...they pricked her finger and her blood glucose was 185 and her urine glucose was 1000. She told us to go home, pack some things, and go to Sunrise hospital. She was concerned that Ellie had Juvenile Diabetes. WHAT? I was expecting an antibiotic and some cranberry juice - not the hospital! So I called Brian, my Mom, Erin, and my brother to make arrangements for the other kids. Brian met me at home and we drove to the hospital.

They drew dome blood, gave her an IV and asked her to pee in a cup - again. She did SO good when they put the IV in...and nurse Rich was awesome, he got it on the first try and Ellie barely felt it. Her blood glucose this time was 145 and her urine was.........well, we couldn't tell because Ellie REFUSED to pee in the cup! She said to me "what if I pee in the cup and it comes back bad? Then I'll need more tests and more pokes!" (How in the world her little 4 yr old brain put all that together is beyond me!) So we waited at least an hour and a half trying to get her to pee. FINALLY she went (I got her so mad at me when she was on the toilet that she forgot to hold it - mean? maybe, but we wanted to get out of there!) Her urine glucose came back 0. And we were allowed to leave. The hospital Dr said that her blood glucose was a little high, but he wasn't ready to call it diabetes. The pediatrician called us on the way home, and said that she wants to monitor Ellie for a few weeks.
Meanwhile I have been Googling the heck out of it and I'm not too happy with what I read. I'm praying that this is the end of it and not the beginning. I have been email Brian tid bits of what I find and he has told me to STOP READING! I'm freaking myself out over nothing (so far)!

I can never avoid it myself but I always get completely freaked out after attempting to self- diagnose from reading things on google.
i am with everyone else - please do not google or research. a lot of the information out there is misinformation. the best source for answers is to ask the doctor or a reliable source such as JDF.
